March 19, 2005 was one of those never-to-be forgotten days for the Cub Scouts of Pack 101, Blairsville, Georgia. It was Pinewood Derby race day...the day these eager cub scouts has worked for since being given a small pine block, four wheels, and four nails to serve as axles on whatever novel creation each young mind might dream up. For over a decade local scout leaders have turned to Kiwanis Club of Blairsville for management of the actual race, an event that might easily descend into hostility and bad press for everyone if rules violations and/or favoritism is suspected. Kiwanians, some fondly remembering their own experiences as little race car builders, enjoy the day almost as much as the Cubs, working hard to guarantee that this event fulfills its promise of fun for all, fairness, and recognition for each participant. The track, a key part of producing a fair and exciting race, was built according to Cub Scouts of America specifications by our construction specialist, Kenny Carleton, a long time Kiwanian. Details and official rules for conducting a Pinewood Derby race can be downloaded from the cub scouts web site.
